Limited editon Legato (for export only)
« on: May 27, 2019, 04:56:23 PM »
OK, rummaging through the mountains of unused parts, I found some of the toroidal transformers the original Legato used. The voltage is different, but since what is between the transformer and the main regulator has been changed, that is not a problem. (We are going to use the same pre-reg combo in all future builds, unless we find something better.)

When we decided to go to the Legato II, we came up with the (probably stupid) idea to use a SLA battery, to take out the SMPS crap. Since everyone killed the batteries (more on that another time), we had to scratch that idea. When we came up with the idea for the "Lite", which had to use a SMPS (and had to be affordable), we came up with a simpler solution. (Feel stupid that one of us didn't think of it earlier. It really is simple, and builds on what countless others have done before us. Just with our twist on it.)

Since toroids let a lot of AC mains crap through, if the new pre-reg combo works, then it  should be good enough to use for a toroid transformer.

So, the deal is......................

Only have so many of the transformers. And just the right amount of filter caps, by the same manufacturer and similar style to match up with those toroids.

So, once these are all gone, we will probably retire the original. So, for this reason, we are only going to sell these to export customers, as we never had any complaints, from customers in countries with 50 Hz mains.

Of course, if it turns out to be popular, we are looking at other ways to keep it alive.

May mean a price increase. Probably will mean the unaffordable BNC will have to go.

(And there is a problem. The "edge launch" BNCs, in the Legato II place the PCB too high inside the chassis, to use power transformers and filter caps.) (And I really like those. Better check to see if they are still available.....................!)
